Three English clubs were involved in Europa League and Champions League finals Man United, Man City and Chelsea which had to make Gareth Southgate wait till the deadline date to name his squad.

Seven players that missed out after being named in the provisional 33-man squad are Aaron Ramsdale (Sheffield United), Ben Godfrey (Everton), Ben White (Brighton), Jesse Lingard (West Ham), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton), Mason Greenwood (Manchester United), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

“If we pick up injuries, that’s the group of players who are on standby. I’ve been there as a player and it’s not nice to receive that news.

“Yesterday afternoon when I had the conversations with those players, although they were disappointed, they understood,” Southgate said.
