Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has moved to quash speculation surrounding the future of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar and says fans should expect good news over the superstar duo imminently.
Mbappe’s current deal expires in 2022 and the Ligue 1 champions have so far been unsuccessful in their talks to extend the 22-year-old forward’s deal amid strong interest from the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool and Juventus.
Reports coming out of the French capital earlier this month suggested PSG had grown so frustrated with Mbappe stalling over a new contract that they may be prepared to accept a cut-price fee for their prized possession this summer to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer.
Neymar has also been linked with a move away from the Parc des Princes but the Brazilian underlined his plans to remain in Paris in January and it appears PSG could be on the verge of a breakthrough with both players.
‘We will be happy to have talks about contracts,’ Leonardo told Sky Sport Italia in the wake of PSG’s 3-2 victory over Bayern Munich in which Mbappe completed a brace and Neymar provided two assists.
‘I think we’ll have some news that will make us all happy soon, but we’ll see.
‘We’ll get to a more concrete situation with them soon, but now we have to focus on the competition as we are entering the final stage.’
Mbappe, Neymar and Co will be confident of progressing through to the last four in Europe after Wednesday’s clash – a repeat of last year’s Champions League final – and Leonardo felt the display was proof of how the team was ‘always improving’.
‘We showed a proud performance, in a complicated situation, with lots of absentees, the snow, Bayern on a 19-game unbeaten streak in the Champions League,’ Leonardo added. ‘I’m very happy.
We also needed a bit of luck. ‘We’ve always been able to establish ourselves in the decisive Champions League games – Manchester United, Barcelona and now today, this team is always improving and tonight has been proof of our strength.
